Hitech name to return to F3 with Alexander Sims driving at Algarve

Renowned Formula 3 name Hitech GP is to make a return to the world of motorsport during the latter part of the current FIA F3 European Championship season it is confirmed today, with former McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner Alexander Sims piloting a Dallara-Mercedes for the team.

Owned and headed by former World Karting Champion, F3 and GP3 racer Oliver Oakes, the new incarnation of Hitech GP is very much a fresh entity but it does retain links with the predecessor entrant – not least through Team Manager David Hayle, who founded Hitech back in 2002.

Based at Silverstone Technology Park in Northamptonshire, a stone’s throw from Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit and situated opposite the Sahara Force India Formula One Team HQ, Hitech GP has big plans going forward in the FIA F3 European Championship and aims to field three cars in 2016.

“Everyone at Hitech GP is looking forward to being back in Formula 3, and especially as part of the FIA F3 European Championship – it’s the best series in the world for developing young drivers”, said Oakes, “There has been a lot of hard work going on behind the scenes to get us to this point, now we’re ready to put the Hitech name back on the map and everyone is relishing the challenge.

“Alexander’s quality speaks for itself, he’s the perfect driver to help develop our car and set-up and the plan is to contest the full championship next year with a three-car entry. We’re putting together a first class team of people and the intention is to compete with the very best.”

With sponsorship from key partners Uralchem and Uralkali, the British team has already undertaken an extensive testing programme with visits to Pembrey in Wales, Misano in Italy, Valencia in Spain and also the Hungaroring near Budapest.

Hitech, of course, enjoyed a memorable title victory in the now defunct British Formula 3 Championship in 2007 with Marko Asmer. The Hitech name has been absent from the UK and European racing scene since 2011.
